About Battlesson(TM) Games

A Wargamer’s Journey from Recruit to Commander

The BattlessonTM series of games provide an introductory-level war and strategy gaming experience just right for beginners to this fascinating hobby. They are perfect learning / teaching tools for “new recruits” to wargaming, but in addition to serving as a handy tool for experienced wargamers (called “grognards”) to teach new players, each one also includes something extra: a BattlessonTM.
Battlesson #1
In the first two BattlessonTM games (
Strike Force One and The Drive on Metz), game replays are provided to improve a new player’s basic skills and demonstrate gameplay with instruction on how military realities apply to these simulation games. The third BattlessonTM game (Assault on Sevastopol) includes an instructive basic training article in general wargaming tactics that can be broadly applied across many different wargames.

Battlesson #1The fourth BattlessonTM game (Israeli Independence) caps this introduction to the hobby by directly answering the question “What is a Wargame?” and further goes on to explain their significance. The concept of war games is deconstructed by their key ingredients in a way that new players, now a bit more experienced in the wargaming hobby, can now consider making wargames on their own.

BattlessonTM games after that will focus on different aspects of game design philosophy – making maps (and using grids), choosing subject matter / themes, various core mechanics (movement, combat, etc.), writing rules, assessing playtest feedback, and many other topics will be covered. Players of this series of games will be able to grow in their hobby from novice, to natural, to ninja (over time).

In answer to Winston Churchill’s request, we will give you the tools so that you can finish the job!
